As Christians gather on Memorial Day, we’ve an obligation to reflect not only on national sacrifice but also on the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. It can be a time to remember those who gave the “last full measure of devotion,” as well as for deeper spiritual reflection, anchoring our gratitude in the gospel’s unshakable truth.

1. Love Lays Down Its Life for Others. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This verse encapsulates both the soldier’s calling and Christ’s redemptive act.

2. Remembering Is a Sacred Act. Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to remember. Likewise, Memorial Day should remind us that remembering the fallen is an act of honoring both human courage and divine grace.

3. Peace Often Comes Through Sacrifice. The peace we enjoy as citizens has been paid for with the lives of others, just as our peace we comes through Jesus’ sacrifice. Let this Memorial Day be a time to reflect on how God brings peace through costly love.

4. Freedom Is a Gift, Not a Guarantee. Freedom is not free, it come at a high cost. While honoring those who fought for our liberty, we remember that our eternal freedom was secured by Christ. Memorial Day calls us to steward our freedoms wisely and humbly.

5. Hope Transcends the Grave. OnMemorial Day, we Christians maintain hope, remembering that Jesus’ resurrection assures us that death isn’t the end.

6. Serve Others As Christ Did. On Memorial Day, we’re reminded of Christ’s model of service. In doing so, may we be moved to renew our commitment to serve others selflessly, just as Jesus and so many brave men and women have done.

7. Fix Your Eyes On Eternal Victory. While we honor earthly heroes, we must not lose sight of our heavenly hope. Memorial Day reminds us that through Christ, every sacrifice finds its ultimate meaning, and every tear will one day be wiped away.

As we reflect on this day of remembrance, may our gratitude be deepened, our hope strengthened and our hearts drawn closer to God’s. May our Memorial Day celebration be one that honors the fallen and glorifies the risen Savior.

Pentecost

It’s impossible to live the life of a Christian without the help of the Holy Spirit. But to appreciate the role of the Spirit in the life of a Christian we have to start with Jesus himself. Even Jesus needed the Spirit. The Spirit played a big role in his life. The Spirit descended on him at his baptism, revealing him as the Father’s beloved Son. There, Jesus also received power from on high for the mission he was about to begin. That same Spirit drove him into the wilderness and sustained Jesus, even as he was tempted by Satan.

It was the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. It was the Spirit who opened the minds of his disciples and helped them to understand the meaning of his death. When he was raised up to glory at the right hand of the Father, Jesus poured out the Spirit on those who were to carry on his mission.

The Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, individually and collectively. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they began their mission. And we see the great courage and confidence with which they did so.

The takeaway here is that the Spirit—the same Spirit that hovered over the waters at the moment of creation—isn’t just given for a moment; the Spirit remains with us—as it did Jesus and the disciples/apostles, throughout their public ministry. As they were continually led, strengthened and guided by the Spirit—so are we. We are accompanied on our journey in the footsteps of Jesus. The Spirit gives us power to participate in his on-going mission. When we don’t know what to pray, the Spirit knows our hearts and intercedes for us, The Spirit is our consoler in times of sadness, our advocate who always pleads our cause.

This Spirit that we’ve been given is not a spirit of timidity, but of power. The coming of the Spirit provided the apostles with the energy, the courage, and the love to get on with the task Christ had given them. May the Holy Spirit come upon us and shower us with his gifts that are so needed during these difficult times.
